Literacy rates are almost 100% in developed countries (including Japan), and they are also improving in the Global South. On the other hand, there are children who have various difficulties in reading and writing, and this is causing problems in their daily lives and school education activities. This leads to problems in communication and social participation for diverse people. Furthermore, it could lead to a loss of new discoveries and technological innovation through the creation of new research values and the improvement of the intersectionality of different fields and cultures. Why is it important to improve literacy? In this session, we will introduce approaches to literacy education and research for children with reading and writing difficulties in the Asian region (e.g. dyslexia, visual impairment, poverty). We will discuss new research frontiers from the perspectives of the humanities and education, and how they can lead to the achievement of inclusion and Quality Education (SDGs Goal 4), the well-being of diverse people, the creation of new research value, and technological innovation.
