Art and design in academic research is the only field of study with a degree of abstraction difficult to describe in words. Yet there are many PhD programs and researchers worldwide who specialize in its disciplines as well as top universities in Europe and the United States that call the field home. Art and design are abstract and figurative, decorative, emotional and sensual, and such diverse creative acts communicate through expression. If research must involve a mixture of expressive and academic perspectives, what value can this complex field––which mankind has continued to live with––have in the world? What is to be our role from an academic standpoint? In this session, we will confront and challenge the future of creativity and expression in art and design research.

 

学術研究におけるArt&Design分野は、全ての学問に関連し、容易には言葉に変換し難い複雑性と抽象度の高い事象や対象を取り扱う、特異な分野である。世界にはこれに取組む多くの博士研究者がおり、欧米のトップランクの総合大学はこの分野を擁している。その研究活動においては、人間の創造的行為に関わる多様な事象や対象について、理論と実践(感性的な造形表現力、デザインスキル等)の交錯的スキルと視座が求められることも多い。人類が決して手放さずに生きてきた複雑で創造性に満ちたこの分野は、これからの世界でどのように社会課題と対峙し、アカデミアの場で何を担うのか。実践系博士とよばれる人材が集まり、まっすぐにこのテーマを見つめてみる。
